253 Splits In Two
Saturday 31st May 2003

Arriva London North Volvo B7TL VLW 140 (LJ03 MFU) at Cambridge Heath, 31/05/03 For many years the route with the most buses allocated to it, today the 253 was split in two, formalising the long-established running of the route in two overlapping sections.

When Stamford Hill garage reopened last year, its second route to be reallocated in was the eastern half of the 253 (Holloway-Aldgate) and today this section was given its own number, the helpfully associated 254.

Already the 253 and 254 are growing apart, as Clapton is taking new DLAs for the 253 (which continues to run between Euston and Hackney Central Station), while Stamford Hill's 254 is receiving new VLWs like VLW 140 (LJ03 MFU, above) seen from the upper deck of a fellow VLW in Cambridge Heath Road. The outgoing Alexander-bodied Leyland Olympians continue on both routes for a while until all the new buses are fitted with their radios.

Not all of Stamford Hill's remaining Ls had route 254 blind inserts fitted so had to continue as 253s, confusing the passengers. However L 320 (J320 BSH, below) is properly turned out as it passes through Mare Street's one-way system.
