London Elects - A Routemaster!
Monday 24th May 2004

Preserved Routemaster RM 70 (VLT 70) being passed by RML 2738 (SMK 738F) in Cheapside, 21/05/04 To me, there's only one issue to vote about when the elections for London's mayor take place on 10th June, and that's the future of London's unique transport heritage in the form of the Routemaster.

Despite his genuine achievements with London's buses (albeit at an enormous and unsustainable cost), Ken Livingstone's reneged on his promise to retain the Routemasters, and that's cost him my vote. Of the other candidates, only Steve Norris has pledged to put a stop to the planned conversion of current RM and RML routes to OPO. Meanwhile, Frank Maloney (UKIP) wants to get rid of bendy buses.

The campaign to get Londoners registered to vote (and one worth doing, as turnout is expected to be low) is being taken to the boroughs in, what else - a classic London bus! Preserved RM 70 (VLT 70) has been done up in a smart blue livery for the cause, and is seen in Cheapside on Friday 21st May. Passing it on the other side of the road is Bow's RML 2738 (SMK 738F) on the 8, which is of course going to lose its Routemasters in just ten days. There will then be no crew-operated services operating in the City at all - unless Londoners vote to save them!
